You were BORN to move

One morning, walking into the kitchen at my in-law's house in Sicily, the music was already blasting and the day's meals were in the works. My father in law, almost 90 years old, was leaning on the kitchen island, tapping his foot and looking like he was about to break into a dance. It occurred to me at that moment that this gentle man, like all of us, was born to move his body. His body naturally expressed his happiness at being surrounded by his beloved family as Italian pop music kept the beat.

It's that simple. Our bodies were made to move. In our own way. In ways that change over time. In ways that reflect different aspects of our personalities and that feel fun. The key is reconnecting with that part of you.

There was a time when movement came naturally to you, even if you don't remember it. At some point, most of us received confusing messages about the purpose of moving our bodies, or we were judged for how we moved, or our identity became linked to how we moved our bodies somehow. These were distortions and not representative of who you really are.

Identifying and acknowledging the origins of the distortions, reframing and reclaiming how we want to relate to movement, and then making that a regular practice - this is how you ultimately develop a joyful and sustainable relationship with movement.

It may be a long process. That's fine. And whenever you doubt whether you can have a relationship with movement, remind yourself that you were born for this.

P.S. The Intuitive Movement for Life Workshop is January 24th at 6:00 pm ET.

I would love for you to join us. Check out all of the details here.

It's a new year and with that comes pressure for a "new you." It makes perfect sense if you feel this pull too strongly to resist but if you are looking for a different way to engage with food and movement, there will always be Intuitive Eating.
