Common misconceptions about meditation – the truth might surprise you!

Meditation is shrouded in myth. I know that because I believed a lot of those myths before I really became a meditator. Perhaps you do too?

Here are a few popular misconceptions and myths about meditation:

  • You have to clear your mind to meditate

  • It is a way to stop thinking

  • It’s a way to become calmer, more serene, and chill

  • It will help you become less sensitive or emotional

  • It’s religious

  • It contradicts any other religious or spiritual beliefs

  • It’s a way to stop feeling discomfort

  • It’s a trendy form of self-help or self-improvement

  • It will help you be successful, to rise above others, and to “crush it” in life

  • It will cause you to become better than who you are now

I get how appealing some of these might be at first, but I assure you, the truth about meditation is much more interesting, nuanced, and truly beneficial (both to the meditator and those around her).

In reality, meditation teaches you (or reminds you how) to feel, to allow things to be as they are, and to stay with yourself throughout all different aspects of your experience. In nourishing a meditation practice, you ultimately feel comfortable to become more and more yourself. And that, in my humble opinion, is what the world needs, now more than ever. We don’t need perfect, emotionally impermeable beings. We need open hearts, courageously compassionate individuals who see the connections between all of us.
